How SafetyBuyer And COBA Improved External Staircase Safety With COBAGRiP®

Kettering Buccleuch Academy, founded in 2009, is a school in England for learners aged 4 –18. Recently, COBA worked with distributor SafetyBuyer to enhance safety for their client, Kettering Buccleuch Academy, by supplying COBAGRiP® Sheet, stair treads and nosing. The products were installed on the school’s fire escape staircase.

Challenge

Kettering Buccleuch Academy identified potential slip hazards on three sets of external fire escape staircases. Rain, dirt, and high levels of foot traffic created hazardous conditions, something no school wants to deal with. The school required an effective anti-slip solution, supported by professional installation.

Solution

SafetyBuyer received the enquiry and partnered with COBA on the project. The following day, Max Proudlock visited the site and met with Adrian Phillips of Kettering Buccleuch Academy to review the application and take measurements.

COBAGRiP® proved to be the ideal anti-slip solution for the project. GRP flooring offers excellent slip resistance in challenging conditions, including wet and icy environments, making it well-suited for external use.

COBAGRiP® Sheet was installed on the landings to provide durable, slip-resistant coverage. Stair treads were fitted to each step, featuring a non-slip silicon carbide surface that overlaps the edge onto the riser for added protection. Stair nosings were also installed to improve visibility and enhance overall safety.

Three staircases were measured, covering a total of:

120 x GRP treads
12 x GRP nosings
99 x GRP sheets for the landings

Installation took place during half term and over five weekends, ensuring all work was completed outside normal school hours.

Result

The installation met all functional and environmental requirements, delivering a safer, more secure stairway system for students and staff.

Now slipping is one less thing to worry about during a busy school day at Kettering Buccleuch Academy.
